The start of the AACC 11th General Assembly

The All Africa Conference of Churches 11th General Assembly guided by the theme ‘Respecting the Dignity and God’s Image in Every Human Being’ kicked off today at the Kigali Convention Center in Kigali, Rwanda.  

In his sermon during the official opening of the assembly, the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Rev. Dr. Olav Tveit quoted “Human dignity is under attack.” He highlighted the timeliness of the assembly theme and reminded the delegates that though God cannot be seen physically, His image is seen in people of all colour, position and character. He further went ahead to say that human beings are God’s work of creation created in God’s image and are therefore dignified. While concluding his sermon, Rev. Dr. Olav Tveit remarked that despite the challenges surrounding the effort towards realizing respect for human dignity, believer in Christ should never forget that human beings have limitations but God is not subjected to limitation.

The words of Rev. Dr. Olav Tveit were further echoed by the President of the AACC, Archbishop Valentine Mokiwa who called upon the assembly to discern, interpret the challenges and give solutions to the issue of human dignity by coming up with resolutions to help counter social injustices. The president also welcomed the delegates to the assembly and appreciated the input of the AACC governing bodies at all levels. 

Bishop Kayinamura, the Chairman of the Council of Protestant Churches in Rwanda (CPR), on behalf of the local host joined the president in welcoming all delegated to Rwanda a country he described as a land of thousand hills characterized by peaceful coexistence and exceptional leadership. He further expressed the gratitude of the Rwandan Church for being considered to be the host to the AACC 11th General Assembly.

The AACC General Secretary’s report was also highlighted by the AACC General Secretary Dr. Andre Karamaga who was highly appreciated and commended by the assembly for his ten years remarkable service. Many described him as a father and a man who has a heart for the wellbeing of the African continent.  

The Assembly was privileged to be graced by representatives from the various AACC partners who brought greeting to the assembly and commended the AACC for their efforts towards the ‘Africa We Want’. The partners included Bread for the World, EMW, Church of Sweden, GlobeThics Geneva, Norwegian Church Aid, ICCO Kirkentie, United Church of Canada, Protestant University Wuppertal – Germany, World Communion of Reformed Churches (WCRC), Act Alliance, Association of Evangelicals in Africa,  - Greetings from the Diaspora and Corat Africa among others. 


The AACC General Committee on the 5th April 2018 unanimously elected Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki as the new General Secretary to take over from Rev. Dr. Andre Karamaga.

Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki, a Tanzanian citizen, is an ordained Minister of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.
1)    Education
He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Theology, a Master of Business Administration (Management) and a PhD in Biblical Studies.
2)    Work Experience:

1998 – 2004: Served as Parish Pastor in his Church and held several positions as Literature and Communication Secretary, Programme Counsellor, Secretary for Missions and Evangelism, Deputy General Secretary, General Secretary etc.

2006 – 2014: General Secretary, United Evangelical Mission (UEM) – Communion of Churches in 3 continents – providing strategic leadership to staff of 75 for 8 years, focusing on holistic mission, diakonia, development, advocacy, partnership etc. UEM has representation in 36 churches in Africa, Asia and Germany.

January 2015 to date: Director of Mission and Development, Lutheran World Federation with responsibility for building relationship between 146 member Churches in all six continents, projects of member Churches, oversight for scholarship programmes etc.

Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki is an accomplished theologian and comes with a wealth of experience related to general management, finance, pastoral, mission and development work, international relations, governance, strategic leadership etc.
3)    Marital Status:
Rev. Dr. Fidon Mwombeki is married with 3 adult children.
