Women’s Workshop On Current Challenges To Family Values

The Theology, Family Life and Gender Justice Department of the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) led by Rev. Dr. Lydia Mwaniki organized a three-day workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, under the theme: “Current Challenges to Family Values in Africa: Role of the Church” from 14 to 16 June 2016.

The workshop gathered 37 participants from 15 countries and reflected on various topics starting with a context analysis of Africa and how Africans have lost so many cultural values along the way and the current economic, political and religious challenges all impacting on the family unit today.
They also pondered over issues related to gender roles and their impact on parenting, the fact that these roles are changing and the consequences thereof, the impact of globalization on the family, the role of the Church in the promotion of family values, issues related to Gender-Based Violence and how they affect families in the various countries.
It was an opportunity also for the participants to make suggestions for a strategy for advocacy on Gender-Based Violence that the All Africa Conference of Churches will champion between June 2016 and 2018, the year of its next General Assembly.

The last day of the workshop coincided with the celebration of the Day of the African Child, which is on 16 June.
A group of children dubbed “AACC Children Peace Ambassadors” and other guests joined the women for the celebration. The highlights of the day were a skit and a poem presented by the children both depicting the evils in the society and the need for shielding children against them, and two presentations from parents raising children with disabilities and the challenges and opportunities they face and how the Church can support them.
