The First
General Assembly: Kampala, Uganda Theme: Freedom and Unity
in Christ 20-30 April
1963
Conclusion
As Kampala
drew to a close, the proposals and exciting ideas that had
previously been only discussion topics became the concrete
basis for the new All Africa Conference of Churches. The
drumbeats that had opened the Assembly signaled the beginning
of a new era in ecumenism. Utuk says of the first General
Assembly: “Unity was the fulcrum around which its vision
turned” (p. 64). Now the time had come to put the Assembly’s
dream of unity into practice.
