The
Second General Assembly: Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire Theme:
Working with Christ in Africa Today 2-12 September
1969
Opening Ceremonies
Abidjan began with a look back in an “AACC report
card” presented by Mr. S.H. Amissah, the AACC’s General
Secretary since 1964. He attempted to curb the
overly-optimistic idealism of Kampala, describing the lack of
adequate finances, weak relationships between French and
English speaking nations, and inadequate research on African
contributions to the ecumenical movement. He also discussed
the need for the AACC to improve its visibility among member
churches.
He was not without good news though, and his
speech highlighted the AACC’s accomplishments since Kampala:
• Resettlement of refugees • Intervention in Sudanese
civil conflict • Publication of a magazine • Hosting
ecumenical seminars
Other exciting progress over the
previous 6 years was discussed throughout the Assembly. These
strides for the ecumenical movement included: •
Unification of Kenyan and Tanzanian liturgies • Malawi’s
effort to make one common curricula for elder and clergy
training • Zambia’s education and social service
improvements • Pulpit exchanges between Roman Catholic and
non-Roman Catholic churches
