Second General Assembly: Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire Theme:
Working with Christ in Africa Today 2-12 September
1969
Speakers and
Presentations • Mr. Jean Mark Ekoh, Minister of
Agriculture, Gabon: Mr. Ekoh discussed social readjustment,
calling for a gradual evolution into modernity.
• Mr.
Eteki Mboumoua, former Minister of Education and head of
UNESCO General Conference: Taking a slightly more radical
stance on social change, Mr. Mboumoua called for mobilization
of individuals who support the church and government. He
maintained that education and culture must be reexamined
before this can happen.
• Rev. Adeolu Adegbola:
Renewal was the theme of Rev. Adgbola’s speech. He called for
a church that gets its own priorities - financial and
otherwise - straight before becoming an active mission force
in the world.
• Archbishop John Amissah, Ghana:
Archbishop Amissah hoped to see more interconfessional
dialogue among Protestants and Catholics. He said these
networks must be created before church unity can truly exist.
• Canon Burgess Carr, of the WCC: The Bible studies
led by Canon Carr focused on Paul’s letters to the
Corinthians.
