The Third
General Assembly: Lusaka, Zambia Theme: Living No Longer
for Ourselves but for Christ 2 Corinthians 5:14-15
1 2-24 May 1974
Work
Groups
• Frontier Ministries: Concentrating on the
needs of Christians in rural areas, this group proposed
sustainable, locally-run industries. The AACC needs to get
more involved 13 in planning programs in order to strengthen
its outreach to the youth, those living in slums, and those
affected by disasters like the drought in the Sahel
(stretching from Senegal to Eritrea) region.
• Renewal
in the Church’s Ministry: Music was named as a key factor in
creating African theology. The group also called for
church-based family counseling and more financial independence
from the West.
• Ministry for Social Justice: This
group introduced practical measures for funding Liberation
Movements, starting with contributions from Assembly
attendees. They declared that political lobbying is important,
particularly against injustices in South Africa and against
Portugal’s oppressive colonialism. Proactive measures were
sought to aid refugees, while a moratorium on finances and
personnel from the West was recommended.
• Ministry in
Dialogue: Setting the ground rules for inter-faith dialogue,
the group advocated non-prejudicial communication with the
goal of increasing the spiritual growth of all involved in
dialogue. The AACC was called to upgrade its Communication
Training Centre.
• Communication: The AACC was asked
to better utilize its access to radio while getting the youth
more involved in media. The work group also suggested more
training programs and highlighted the importance of
communicating in multiple languages.
