The Fourth
General Assembly: Nairobi, Kenya Theme: Following in the
Light of Jesus Christ John 8:12 31 July – 12 August
1981
Introduction
The 4th
Assembly’s 450 participants (154 of whom were delegates) from
94 churches met in Nairobi after a tumultuous 7 years. The
moratorium put forth by Lusaka was met with a loss of
political and financial control of the AACC. The leadership
also suffered a setback when General Secretary Carr left the
AACC. He was succeeded by Mr. Sarwat G. Shehata in 1978 and
Canon Kodwo A. Ankrah from 1978 to 1980. Rev. Maxime V.
Rafransoa, formerly of the World Council of Churches (WCC),
accepted the position after Ankrah and was the presiding
General Secretary during the 4th Assembly in 1981. The
delegates gathered in Nairobi ready to discuss the future of
the AACC.
