Lectionary
5 TRINITY: 22 - 28 JUNE 2008 THEME: ‘LIVING AS
CHILDREN OF LIGHT.’ READING: EPHESIANS 4: 17 – 32
Jesus Christ has set an example for you and me to
follow as his disciples. The Good News he has brought into the
world is that, inspired by the Holy Spirit, we can transform
society with the radiance of our actions.
Like the
rays of light in a dark cave or room, God’s inspiration should
radiate through the words we speak, the thoughts we think, the
deeds we do and the company we keep. What difference does it
make for you and me to declare that we are Christians? What
difference does it make for you and me to belong to one
denomination or another? From the perspective of those who do
not belong to our family, our church, our nation, our region,
what matters most is how we relate with others, not what we
expect of them. Today in our nations and churches we are
challenged – each one of us to become agents of social
transformation, proclaiming hope where there is despair, peace
where there is war, joy where there is sorrow, unity where
there is conflict, harmony where there is discord, clarity
where there is confusion, light where there is darkness. Too
often the church as an institution and Christians as
individuals tend to get entangled in the complexities of our
social settings.
The Gospel challenges us
always to focus on those values, ideals and virtues which are
consistent with the teaching of our Master, Jesus Christ. “You
were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put
off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful
desires, to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to
put on the new self, created to be like God in true
righteousness and holiness.”

PRAYER Eternal God, you show to those who
are in error the light of your truth, that they may return to
the way of righteousness: May we as Christians reject the
things that are contrary to our profession and work for
integrity of our continent and the entire creation. Through
Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. PRAY FOR: Mozambique (National
Day – June 25)
