Lectionary
15 TRINTY: 31 AUGUST – 6 SEPTEMBER, 2008 THEME: ‘NOW
IS THE TIME OF GOD’S FAVOUR!’ READING: ISAIAH 49: 8-13, 2
CORINTHIANS 6: 1 – 13
God is a God of history. This
means that God is always interested in what goes on in
people’s individual and communal lives. God is not just
watching events from a distance. No! God is very much
concerned with what happens to each person, to each village,
to each country, and God is deeply involved and concerned with
what is going on every day in Africa.
The people of
faith have learnt that God has always been concerned with the
way they live their lives. The lives of people of faith have
tended to revolve around covenant, apostasy, exile, promise,
restoration and return. From the history of the Jewish people
of faith we have learnt that God allowed them to be taken away
into captivity. While in captivity God raised prophets who
spoke God’s mind about the conditions there and the hope of
return to their motherland. After the destruction of the
cities, the desacralization of the land, and the plunder, God
has gathered the people of faith back to the motherland. God
has always followed God’s people and restored them to their
land.
The message for Africa is that God will not turn
God’s back against us, but in due time God will deliver us
from all forms of evil. God will indeed show favour to our
land, to our people and to our children.

PRAYER Lord God of time and
eternity: you made us creatures of time, that when time is
over we may attain your blessed eternity. With your gift of
time, give wisdom to redeem the time, lest our day of grace be
lost. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
