Lectionary
LENT 3: 24 FEBRUARY – 1 MARCH 2008 THEME: ‘HE WHO IS
NOT WITH ME IS AGAINST ME!’ READING: LUKE 11: 14 – 26
Jesus is the Lord of all – he has overcome the power
of evil and death, and his strength is greater than all that
we face. Yet he exercises his victory on his own terms – he
resists those who ask for a sign, and in the same way may not
answer our prayers in the ways we think he ought to. We can be
confident of sharing in his victory when we let ourselves be
used by him, in his ways. His desire is that we should stand
with him and pursue Christ-like alternatives for our
continent, actively working for Christ-like behaviour and
Christ-like standards in every walk of life.
Jesus’
sovereignty spans everything from international economic
systems through our political life, down to the conduct of
life within communities, local business, schools and the home.
And when we stand with Jesus, we stand alongside everyone else
who is with Jesus and should live with a generous spirit of
co-operative harmony, not only with those of our own
congregations, but with all those who are truly Jesus’
brothers and sisters. This is both God’s command to us as the
body of Christ and the means of making God’s kingdom more
effectively known and recognised. Our calling is to be
faithful to Jesus and to live faithfully with all who follow
him.

PRAYER Lord God Almighty, whose Son Jesus Christ
prayed for disciples that in all the conflicts of the world
you would keep them from the evil one, strengthen us to resist
every assault and temptation and to follow you the only God,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
